We then drive 150 km (2.5 hours) to the iconic small town of Plyos. Plyos is one of the oldest towns in Russia, dating back to the twelfth century. It is one of the best preserved; but its rare beauty, art heritage and authentic historical atmosphere of the nineteenth century truly set it apart. Plyos was made famous by many great Russian painters who lived and worked here and admired this beautiful Volga River settlement. Their artworks are now exhibited in the State Tretyakov Gallery.
