Highlights of Tomsk & Tobolsk

In Tomsk, Western Siberia, you will discover both cultural and historical aspects of Siberia's development since 17th century. Tomsk's great wooden architecture most preserved in Siberia. On a weird history side, we have the only in the world NKVD museum here dedicated to Stalin’s repressions. In winter, especially before New Year, Tomsk turns into a classic Russian provincial fairy tale. The first university of Siberia was founded here. Tatar street is the entire quarter of old wooden houses. That were Tatar people who approached Tsar Boris Godunov to protect them against the brutal Siberian tribes – it is when the history of Tomsk began. There are catacombs under the quarter. The town opened gates to Asia and China.

The old believers - “the original” Orthodox people preserving the traditional way of life. It will require to travel outside of the town. We will visit Semiluzhensky prison - a Cossack prison of the XVII century. fortress in the village. Semiluzhki Tomsky district (20 km from Tomsk, just above the confluence of the river. Kamenki in the river. Big Kyrgyzstan). The village was founded by service people in 1664 as the village of Semiluzhnaya. The Siberian tract passed through the village, a postal station was arranged here, serving a large section of the road. In 1891 Tsarevich Nikolai, the future Russian emperor Nicholas II, stayed in Semiluzhny, returning from his trip to the Far East.

People lived in the area of the Taseyev and Angara rivers long before BC, mysterious taiga Scythians. These places are called "prodigal": compasses are knocked down here, so finding some of them is not easy. The Scythians, who owned metals, left the richest artifacts altar monuments. Their "power places" were mountain peaks that attract lightning, where stone idols still live - the northernmost of Asian sculptures. Here are some highlights we can show you around Krasnoyarsk:

➤Kazachinskoe settlement, 300 y.o famous for its crafts and fairs

➤Kazachinskie rapids – the most difficult place of Yenisey river

➤Yeniseysk town – a time machine. Fur and gold industry center (historical downtown is currently pending approval to be added into UNESCO World Heritage List). Churches and monasteries. Called “Father of Siberian towns”, for 150 years the main gate into Eastern Siberia

A silent witness of past times - the Taseevsky idol - the northernmost stone cult complex, which has no analogues in Russia. Similar figures were only found in Mongolia at the border with China. It dates back to the early Iron Age, the Scythian era, produced by the 4th century BC - 1st century AD. due to the magnetic anomaly present here, lightning is often hit in tall pines. Scientists explain - no mysticism, just a high iron content in the soil. According to the stories of local residents, UFOs often circle over sculpture. Bears should be asleep this time of the year, but an armed ranger is a must.
