Welcome to Kazan!

The origin of the name "Kazan" remains somewhat uncertain, but the most widely accepted theory connects it to the Bulgar (and modern Tatar) word qazan, meaning "boiler" or "cauldron." One of the most popular legends surrounding the city's name is that a sorcerer advised the Bulgars to build a city at a location where a boiler, placed in the ground, would boil water without any fire. This led them to choose a spot on the shore of Lake Kaban, where the legend suggests such a phenomenon could occur.

Today, Kazan is a thriving metropolis and one of the largest and most significant cities in Russia. It stands as a major religious, economic, political, scientific, educational, cultural, and sports hub. In recognition of its importance, the Russian Patent Office officially granted Kazan the title of the "Third Capital" of Russia in April 2009. The city has also hosted several major international events, including the 2013 Summer Universiade, the 2014 World Fencing Championships, the 2015 World Aquatics Championships, and was one of the host cities for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.
