New Year in Russia

Novy God, or the Russian New Year, is a highly celebrated holiday that combines both a festive atmosphere and a sense of tradition. The celebrations are marked by a variety of customs and rituals, and the countdown to midnight is a key moment of joy for everyone.

Midnight Moment: the highlight of Novy God is when the Kremlin Clock strikes twelve, signaling the start of the New Year. This moment is preceded by the Russian President's holiday message, which is broadcasted nationwide, and followed by the National Anthem of Russia. It's a time of national pride and collective celebration.

Like many New Year's celebrations around the world, Russian families gather for a festive meal, often with an abundance of food and drinks. Traditional dishes might include Olivier salad, Herring under a fur coat, and a variety of meats and sweets.

The period between New Year and Orthodox Christmas on January 7th is a time for relaxation and rest, with many Russians taking the week off to enjoy time with family, travel, or simply unwind. Novy God is known for its cheerful and loud festivities. From fireworks to music and dancing, it's an exciting occasion filled with joy and communal spirit. Many people also exchange gifts, and it is common to decorate homes with New Year trees, often inspired by the traditional Christmas tree. It's a celebration that combines modern revelry with deep cultural traditions, creating a memorable experience for anyone who participates. Whether you're spending it with family, friends, or even in a public gathering, Novy God is sure to be an unforgettable experience!
