After lunch, we will continue our trip to Bogolyubovo. The Church of the Intercession on the Nerl (Pokrova na Nerli) is one of the most iconic examples of early Russian architecture, renowned for its serene beauty and historical significance. Built in 1164, it was commissioned by Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky in memory of his son, who died during the final battle against the Volga Bulgars. The church's striking location—standing alone amid lush green meadows with a small lake reflecting its pristine white walls and elegant single dome—enhances its poetic and almost ethereal quality.
This church is a prime example of the northern Russian style, influenced by Byzantine architecture, particularly in its design and iconography. The influence of Byzantium on early Russian religious art and architecture is evident, as Russia adopted and adapted many Byzantine traditions, from the construction of churches to the development of icon painting. The Church of the Intercession on the Nerl remains one of the most enduring symbols of Russia’s cultural and architectural heritage, with its quiet, almost mystical presence resonating across centuries.
Several times in history, the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl was about to be destroyed, but each time it miraculously remained intact. It is no wonder it is now UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Take a note, there is no road for cars/vans. We will drive as close as we can but need to walk the final 1.2 kilometer.
