About Catherine's Palace

It is a Rococo palace located in the town of Tsarskoye Selo (Pushkin), 30 km south of St. Petersburg. It was the summer residence of the Russian tsars. The residence originated in 1717 when Catherine I hired German architect Johann-Friedrich Braunstein to construct a summer palace for her pleasure. Construction lasted for four years, and on 30 July 1756 the architect presented the brand-new 325-meter-long palace to the Empress.

About Troika

Troika is a traditional harness driving combination using a team of three horses abreast and pulling a sleigh or a carriage. The history of Russian troika goes back to the 17-18th century. At full speed a troika could reach 45–50 kilometres per hour which seemed extremely fast at that time. Troika rides became common during religious celebrations and festivities including weddings.
