Novodevichy Convent imageNovodevichy Convent

Another day to eplore Russia's capital with our guide. Novodevichiy (New-maiden) Convent was founded in 1524 to celebrate the victory over Lithuania. The oldest building is the white Cathedral, with 16th-century frescoes. Novodevichy is the functioning monastery, please respect and be dressed accordingly. This is UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tour continues as we drive to the Sparrow Hills for the best views in the city, where you will also see the highest of Stalin's skycarppers: the Moscow State University.

You also have the opportunity to visit the adjoining Novodevichy cemetery, the final resting place of many Russian icons from the worlds of art, science and politics – including Boris Yeltsin, Nikita Khrushchev, Molotov, Stanislavski and Chekhov.

The cemetery is beautifully located next to the lake said to have been the inspiration behind Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake ballet.
